Trilogy Construction recently earned a Certified Aging-in-Place designation from the National Association of Home Builders. “What is this?” you might ask. Since we trained and passed the NAHB tests, we are now officially certified as one of the building industry’s top professionals with skills and knowledge specific to home modifications for Aging-In-Place. Yes, we’ve always built with these concepts in mind, but this certification helped us bring all of the good ideas together under one umbrella called “Aging-in-Place”.
Aging-in-Place isn’t just for the aged and disabled. The National Association of Home Builders says this is the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling industry. It is for everyone who wants to safely accommodate people as they age in place…at home. It is about thinking ahead with modifications to make homes comfortably accessible.
You may ask yourself, “Why modify now, especially if I am still very active?” Modifying now means older parents can come to visit and be at ease in your home. It means in the unlikely case of accident or disability, your home is a place where you are able to rehabilitate. Also, modifying now means you might just get to stay in familiar surroundings later in life, without having to rely on extended care too soon.
We embrace the Aging-in-Place concept because it adds value to your home. Smart, attractive design modifications can be made regardless of your income level. It broadens your future resale market by inviting a more diverse base of buyers. It is one of the most overlooked areas of household sustainability. What can be more sustainable than extending the usable life of your home?
Here’s an example of what we are doing as a result of this training. We are building for a local person who was in the drafting stages and working with an architect. We took a look at her plans and suggested wider door passages, an open kitchen work area, a different shower layout and a level entry off the garage. At the design stage, these changes are easy to make and won’t impact her budget. Her home will be worth more on the resale market and it will be a safer place for her to age independently.
There are many thoughtful innovations and fun ideas we can offer. The Aging-in-Place concepts should accompany any remodel or new home project. Your home won’t appear to be “institutionalized” in any way. It will simply have great appeal with more universal functionality. If you are planning to build or remodel, why not add some features to allow you to enjoy your home further into the future? Remember our motto is: “Your Team to Build Your Dream”.
